To you she may be just a fictional character. To me, she is a childhood hero. When we are young, and even as we grow older, we come to admire characters we watch or read about. That is one of the reasons why storytelling, even in the case of fiction is so important. Stories have to power to influence people in any number of ways. Anne Shirley was a character who I could relate to in some ways and wanted to be like in many others. I admired her appreciation of words and her gift for using them. I admired her headstrong determination, her dignified pride, her endless curiosity, her grace, and her sense of adventure. Perhaps most of all, I admire the way that she valued her friendships and her kinship. Although the books were a lovely read, I think I most fell in love with Meagan Follows portrayal of the character. I never grow tired of the films, and even now as I watch her in my adult life, I still want to be like her and find myself being reminded of ways that I can be a better daughter or a better friend, and eventually a good wife and mother.
