"Take me to the church where my father and my mother Prayed for me and my dear brother"

I hate to admit this, but I kind of fell in love with this song the first time I heard it. It really gets to me. I don’t by any means agree with the writer/singer’s unbelief in heaven and other similar notions that were implied, but at the heart of the song is a longing for simple childhood happiness, that ignorant bliss, and an almost-prayer that his mother not be denied at the gates of heaven as a result of his own unbelief.

Josiah Leming, who wrote the song, grew up in a family that struggled with a number of issues, primarily finances and his mother’s battle with cancer (she passed in September of 2010)

When I listen to the song, I wonder what drives a person away from “the God of their parents”. Right now I am taking part in an initiative to figure out a new approach to church as we know it. If you can relate to a disconnect from the religion you grew up with or from “church” and other religious institutions, please share your experience. If not, what are your objective thoughts on the matter?
